What I’ve Learned from Two Years of Professional Debating (and the World Championships!):
After spending over two years in the professional debating scene and having the incredible experience of being part of the World Championship team, I’ve picked up some lessons that go way beyond just debating—and they totally apply to the business world too!
Listen (Seriously, Listen!):
Every time we lost, it was usually because we didn’t respond to what the other team said properly. The secret isn’t just in making your own argument but really listening to the other side and showing where they’ve gone wrong. It’s the same in business—being able to engage with the other person’s perspective is half the battle.
Work with Your Team:
Debating is never a solo mission. If you’re not talking to your teammates or backing each other up, you’re going to miss something important. The same goes for any business— if you’re not communicating well with your team, you’ll miss out on crucial points and lose the advantage.
Take Structured Notes:
Debates fly by quickly, and without proper notes, you’ll lose track of key points. Good, organized notes are everything! In business, the same rule applies—structured thinking and organized note-taking help you stay on top of important discussions.
These lessons are why I think every company should hold debate sessions. It’s an amazing way to build skills that matter—like critical thinking, communication, and teamwork.
Let’s all sharpen our thinking and level up together!
